JACK WHITE


Jack White (who began life as John Gillis in 1975 Detroit) has been one of rock music's major driving forces in the 21st century. During the '00's, he and his ex-wife Meg White recorded and performed as the duo called the White Stripes, whose small-scale garage-rock ethos brought rock and roll back to its barest essence -- namely the blues -- at a time when rock desperately needed to be saved from the miserable state it had evolved into. By the end of that decade, White had formed two other bands: the neo-classic-rock Raconteurs and the goth-rock Dead Weather. All three of his bands became largely inactive after 2010, so White took the next logical course of action: he became a successful solo artist.



White has been at the vanguard of the resurgence of vinyl records. His indie label Third Man Records has earned a reputation for being uncommonly creative with the vinyl record medium. Since 2009, Third Man Records has run a subscription service called the Vault, which issues exclusive limited-edition vinyl items (usually one 12-inch LP and one 7-inch single) to its Platinum members every three months. The material in these Vault packages usually consists of works by White or his bands, but they sometimes revolve around other Third Man label artists as well.
